Japan Airlines — Japan's second-largest airline group
Japan Airlines (JAL) was founded in 1951 and is Japan's second-largest airline group. After entering bankruptcy and filing for corporate reorganization in 2010, it re-listed on the stock exchange in 2012 and dramatically strengthened its financial position. As a Oneworld member carrier, it operates an international route network.
Beyond the JAL mainline, the JAL Group also owns J-Air (domestic regional routes), ZIPAIR Tokyo (international low-cost carrier), and Jetstar Japan (domestic low-cost carrier) among its subsidiaries.

Pay is in Japanese yen and is fully taxable under Japan's progressive income and residence taxes plus social insurance — unlike tax-free Gulf carriers. Compensation combines base pay with an hourly flight (duty) allowance and an added premium for international routes. A performance-linked bonus of roughly two to four months' pay is paid annually, and an overseas layover allowance is paid separately according to city rank. JAL also has a distinctive completion bonus paid five years after upgrade to Captain, and provides loss-of-license insurance covering both on- and off-duty incidents.

International network: long-haul services to North America (New York, Los Angeles, Dallas and others); Europe (London, including codeshares with Finnair); and Asia and Oceania (Sydney, Bangkok, Bali and others). JAL was the first Japanese airline to introduce the Airbus A350, flown on Haneda-based routes. Domestic network: major trunk routes serving Haneda, Itami, New Chitose, Okinawa and other hubs. Regional routes are operated by group carrier J-Air (CRJ200/ERJ170), while the domestic mainline is flown mainly with the B737-800 and B767.
Around 240 aircraft. Airbus A350 — the fleet's latest-generation type, flown on both international and domestic routes; Boeing 777 (incl. 777-300ER) — the mainstay of long-haul international flying, carrying the highest flight hours and allowances; Boeing 787 (787-8/9) — the main type on medium-haul international routes across Asia and Oceania; Boeing 767-300 — domestic trunk and short-haul international; Boeing 737-800 — domestic mainline. Regional flying is handled by J-Air using CRJ200/ERJ170 aircraft.
Conducted at the JAL Training Center in the Narita/Tokyo area. Covers aeronautical engineering, meteorology, aviation law and related subjects.
Cadets are sent to partner flight schools in the United States, the Philippines and elsewhere to obtain their private through commercial licenses. Costs are fully covered by JAL.
After obtaining a type rating on full-flight simulators, cadets pass a line check and enter service as First Officers (F/O).
About 10–15 years after joining. Timing is influenced by the company's fleet demand, individual performance evaluation and health status.
Promotion to Captain follows simulator training plus aircraft training and passing a line check.
Proficiency checks (in the simulator) are held one to two times per year. Continuous recurrent training is mandatory.
Discounted tickets for the employee and family, also usable across Oneworld partner airlines.
JAL Health Insurance Society coverage, pilot-specialized medical support, and full loss-of-license insurance.
Defined-benefit corporate pension plus defined-contribution pension, and a lump-sum retirement allowance — a substantial scheme scaled to years of service.
Company housing and dormitory system with a housing allowance, plus relocation cost support when changing base.
Parental leave and reduced-hours working; male pilots have a track record of taking parental leave, and family-care leave is fully provided.
Cadet-program training costs (running to tens of millions of yen) are fully covered by JAL, as are type-rating training costs.
Hiring status: Company-trained cadets only — FY2026 new-graduate cadet applications are open, but JAL does not currently hire licensed or experienced pilots (no direct entry).
A Class 1 aviation medical certificate is required. English proficiency (e.g. TOEIC) is also assessed. Competition can reach several hundred applicants per place.
Important: JAL does NOT currently conduct mid-career, ready-to-fly hiring of licensed pilots (CPL/ATPL holders). Even this career route trains applicants who hold no license from zero after joining. Intake of pilots with flight experience at other carriers is not currently open.
