Overview

About Ryukyu Air Commuter (RAC)

Ryukyu Air Commuter (RAC) is a commuter airline within the JAL Group, established in 1981. Based at Naha Airport on Okinawa's main island, it specializes in serving Okinawa's remote-island routes, including Kumejima, Aguni, Tokashiki, Minamidaito and Kitadaito. It plays a vital role as essential daily-life infrastructure for island residents, providing rapid access to remote islands that would otherwise take several hours to reach by ferry.

As a member of the JAL Group, RAC maintains high safety standards that comply with JAL's maintenance and operational criteria, while specializing in low-capacity passenger transport aboard turboprop aircraft (the DHC-8-Q300). Its captains are local experts who combine advanced airmanship with intimate knowledge of the weather and terrain unique to the remote islands. Flying experience in the specialized environment of Okinawa's island routes builds a valuable career for a pilot.

Operations

Routes & Fleet

Routes

RAC's network centers on short hops from Naha out to Okinawa's remote islands: Naha ↔ Kumejima (approx. 35 min), Naha ↔ Aguni (approx. 25 min), Naha ↔ Tokashiki (approx. 20 min), and Naha ↔ Minamidaito / Kitadaito (approx. 1 hour), together with inter-island connecting routes across Okinawa. Operations are short-haul and high-frequency, with multiple flights per day. Pilots need the ability to cope with the rapidly changing weather typical of island environments, precision-approach skills for small airports, and a strong sense of mission serving as a lifeline for island residents.

Fleet

DHC-8-Q300 — a 50-seat turboprop. Naha (OKA) serves as the hub, and the operation is dedicated to remote-island routes within Okinawa Prefecture, functioning as an essential daily-life lifeline for island communities.
