Introduction
This guide walks through the career move into STARLUX Airlines (星宇航空 / SJX / JX) and its pilot selection process, together with every formality required between the offer and your first day. Written for Japanese pilots targeting a STARLUX job, it covers the application pack, the selection event, the resident visa application and the paperwork back home in Japan — all from first-hand experience.
The information here reflects the first half of 2025. The fine detail of application and submission documents may change. Always confirm STARLUX's current requirements on the official recruitment site.
Watch the Training Bond — if the type you currently fly differs from the type you will fly at STARLUX, resigning of your own accord within four years of upgrading to captain obliges you to repay training costs of up to NTD 300万. Check the terms before you apply.
Pay & Benefits
Salary, Staff Travel and Leave
Salary
Pay is built from base pay + a role allowance, plus a guarantee of 50 flight hours during training and 75 hours once you upgrade to captain. Taiwan pays 13 months of salary a year: the 13th month (base pay + role allowance + the 75-hour guarantee) is paid at year end regardless of company performance, starting from the year end that falls a full year after your upgrade. Depending on results, a base-pay-linked bonus may also be added at Lunar New Year.
| Item | Amount | Notes |
| During training (10-year captain benchmark) | approx. NTD 285,000 / month | Includes 50 flight hours |
| After upgrade (10-year captain benchmark) | approx. NTD 422,500+ / month | Includes the 75-hour guarantee |
| Hours above the guarantee (over 75h) | approx. NTD 5,500 / hr | |
| Housing allowance | NTD 30,000 / month | Flat rate (taxable) |
| Transport allowance | NTD 1,000 / month | Flat rate (taxable) |
How you are paid
Paid in New Taiwan dollars (NTD) into a Taiwanese bank account. Your pay grade is set by your years of service as a captain or first officer.
Tax
Taiwan levies income tax only — there is no equivalent of Japanese residence tax. There is no year-end adjustment, so every worker files a tax return each May.
Housing
For your first 30 days in Taiwan the company books the same hotel used during the selection event. You find your own rental in the meantime. No company accommodation is provided.
Contract
A three-year contract (Taiwanese pilots are on fixed-term contracts too). Health insurance and LOL (loss-of-license) cover included.
Staff Travel
Flight crew can use discounted tickets and (partially) FOC tickets from day one. Entitlements broaden with seniority.

myIDTravel (ZED)
Available from day one. Economy class only. The list of participating carriers — JAL and ANA among them — keeps growing.
Home Visit Tickets
One return ticket every three months. Expires if unused for 12 months. Parents, spouse and children may also use it (destinations where family live only). Apply between three months and seven days before travel.
SNY (Supernumerary)
Available once you upgrade to captain. Limited to home-visit travel on STARLUX services to destinations where family live, twice a month. Apply at least 48 hours before the flight. Business class is possible, but seat availability may put you in economy or on the jump seat. You travel as crew in uniform (no epaulettes, badge or tie when seated in the cabin) and must report to the operations center. Statutory duty and rest limits relative to your flying duties must be taken into account.
Leave System
Annual leave runs 20–30 days depending on rank. Two programs exist for foreign crew, and you may also decline both and stay on the same system as local crew.
The system shared with local crew (bidding)
- Long Term Bidding — two bidding windows a year (October and April); once a year you can take 7–12 consecutive days of annual leave
- Monthly Bidding — bid by the 19th of the preceding month for up to six consecutive days of annual leave in the following month
- Bidding Flight — bid once a month, by the 19th of the preceding month, for a specific flight and date you want to operate
- Request DO after ANL used up — once your annual leave is exhausted, you may request up to three days off per month
Bidding points are granted every year according to rank. Taiwanese public holidays and the New Year period cost 10 pts/day, Christmas and Lunar New Year 15 pts/day, everything else 5 pts/day. Where bids clash, seniority decides.
① Commute Pattern (for foreign crew)
Eight consecutive days off every month (the company sets the dates; it can drop to six depending on circumstances). No bidding schemes other than Monthly Bidding are available. Outside the block you tend to fly long strings of consecutive duties, but your total days off per month are higher than under the other options.
② Home Visit Annual Leave (for foreign crew)
On top of the bidding schemes, one block of eight consecutive days a year on the dates you choose. Apply at least two months ahead. Counts as annual leave. Not available over Lunar New Year. No other bidding restrictions apply.
You can join or switch foreign-crew programs once you have completed the captain upgrade check (if you leave a program partway through, you can only rejoin each October).
Application Documents
Direct-Entry Pilot Recruitment — The Document Checklist
◉
Application Form — download from the STARLUX recruitment site and complete
◉
Passport / Logbook / ATPL & type ratings / medical certificate / English proficiency certificate — submit scans
◉
Degree of Highest Education — your graduation certificate. If it exists only in Japanese, attach your own English translation (no certification required)
◉
Latest PTPC — your most recent recurrent training/check record, in English. If no English version is available, you can instead have the examiner who ran your last proficiency check sign an FAA-format form. A simple written statement giving the dates of your most recent proficiency and line checks and confirming you passed is also acceptable
◉
Non-incident / accident Record (issued by your current or previous employer)
◉
Document to prove current or previous company employment
◉
Reference Letter from Chief Pilot
○
License Verification Letter — may be omitted, as the JCAB does not issue it to individuals
○
Non-criminal record (criminal record certificate) — may be omitted at application stage, as the National Police Agency will not issue one yet. Obtain it after you receive the offer and hand over the original on your first day
For anything you cannot produce at application stage, it is worth saying so in writing when you submit.

There is no prescribed format for those three documents (non-incident/accident record, proof of employment and reference letter): draft them yourself in English and have your company sign or seal them. Combining them into a single page is fine as long as the content is all there.
Where to send it, and what happens next
Send to: [email protected]
- • If anything is missing, recruitment will email you a reminder
- • Emails are deleted automatically one year after you send your documents
- • Recruitment contact: Karen Hsu
- • If the Training Bond applies to you, they will ask whether you accept it before reviewing your paperwork
- • To fix your seniority (pay grade) you must submit a logbook copy or an appointment letter proving when you upgraded to captain
- • Once your documents clear, dates for the selection event are agreed → the detailed itinerary, hotel and flight information arrive 7–10 days before departure
- • Only the simulator type used for the assessment (A321, A330 or A350) is notified in advance. No study material for the assessment is provided
- • The fleet you fly after joining depends on manning and training-slot availability, so it bears no relation to the type used in the assessment
- • All travel within Taiwan is arranged and paid for by you
Selection Event
The Selection Event — Six Days, Start to Finish
The event runs six days in total, including travel days.
DAY
1
Travel to Taiwan
- • Flights to and from Japan are normally booked on STARLUX services
- • At Narita, departures and arrivals use Terminal 2
- • Registering on the SJX app before departure lets you choose your seat, pick a meal and check in online
- • From October 2025 the Taiwan arrival card is online-only (registration opens three days before arrival)
- • You arrive at Taoyuan Airport Terminal 1, then take a taxi or bus to the hotel
Getting from the airport to the hotel: for the bus, go down to B1F and get off at "Taimall" (台茂). For a taxi, use the rank at the far left of the same floor as the customs exit. The MRT does not serve the hotel area, so it is not an option.
Monarch Skyline Hotel (尊爵天際大飯店)
- • About 15 minutes from the airport by taxi
- • Check-in from 16:00
- • Breakfast and laundry (unlimited) are paid by the company
- • Towels, shampoo, body wash and a hairdryer are provided
- • Disposables such as toothbrushes and soap were discontinued in 2025 — bring your own
- • Sockets are 110V. Phone chargers that work without an adapter can be used as they are
- • "TaiMall", adjoining the hotel, has a food court and restaurants and covers almost anything you need
- • There are several 7-Elevens near the hotel
DAY
2
Simulator assessment
Starlux Operations Center (about 15 minutes from the hotel by taxi)
Two versions of the ride
Applicants current on Airbus
Includes a LOFT (Line Oriented Flight Training) detail: depart RCTP, handle a High Eng Vib and return, then an ILS raw-data approach from FINAL, go-around and landing.
Everyone else
Maneuvers only. Details below.
The maneuvers profile
Two captains ride with you (one on the panel, one in the right seat). They brief you beforehand that this is an assessment of handling skill and that procedures will not be tested.
① RCTP 05L normal take-off
Manual control + auto thrust. IMC around 500ft. Runway heading, level at 3,000ft. Then switch to manual thrust, FD off, FPV (bird) displayed. Climb 1,000ft/m + 25° bank left turn; descend 1,000ft/m + right turn. Speed fixed at 250kt. Each step is called out to you verbally as you go.
② Reposition to take-off position → RTO
Start the roll again; engine failure between 100kt (the Boeing equivalent of 80kt) and V1 → RTO. The only actions required are closing the thrust levers and selecting reverse.
③ Take off again → V1 cut
An unannounced V1 cut (severe damage), flown to flap retraction. Manual handling throughout.
④ Single-engine 2,000ft ILS 05L dog leg
Single engine, manual control + auto thrust + FD. IMC to around 500ft. Land off the approach once visual. No go-around.
If you have never flown the Airbus, no one expects you to know the Airbus procedures and call-outs for an RTO or engine failure — concentrate on flying the aircraft and ask on the spot when you are unsure. The content of the assessment may vary from candidate to candidate.
The simulator assessment finishes in the afternoon, and Karen Hsu emails the result that evening. If you pass, you move on to the interview the next day (DAY 3).
DAY
3
Interview
Starlux Operations Center (same location as DAY 2)
- • Aim to arrive about ten minutes before the reporting time
- • You are shown to a briefing room to wait with the other candidates
- • You draw one card from a set laid face down in advance (a photo of an aircraft problem or accident scene)
- • Candidates are taken into the interview room one at a time, card in hand
- • Three interviewers (one management captain each from the A321, A330 and A350)
- • Length: about 20 minutes
Questions actually asked
Q
Introduce yourself (background, flight hours and so on)
Q
Describe the photo on the card you drew / what would you do as PIC if you found this during the walkaround / what would your PA say if passengers were already boarded
Q
Detailed questions about your career to date
Q
Have you ever dealt with a serious problem in flight
Q
Do you have international experience
Q
What is your company's definition of a stabilized approach / what would you do at a 1,500ft/m rate of descent below 1,000ft
Q
Why did you choose STARLUX Airlines
Q
How did the DAY 2 simulator assessment go
Q
Is there a fleet you would like to fly after joining
Q
Your own questions
After the interview: Karen Hsu runs through the package with you and presents your individual salary figure in detail. If there is a fleet you would like to fly after joining, telling Karen Hsu at this point can sometimes get you what you want.
DAY
4
Medical (day 1)
Civil Aviation Medical Center (民用航空醫務中心) — about 45 minutes to an hour from the hotel by taxi
Before the exam
Fast for 8 hours
Bring with you
Passport, photo (3x4)
Center opens
7:30 (report by 8:00)
You start by entering your details on a computer (select SJX as the company). Keep your phone on you at all times for the psychological assessment. Staff explain each test carefully. Lunch break is 12:00–13:30 (Songshan Airport is within walking distance and has a food court).
Selected test items
| Test | Details |
| ECG (treadmill) | You walk and run for a considerable time. The fitter you are, the slower your heart rate climbs — so it tends to take longer. Wear clothes and shoes you can run in |
| Eye movement test | You wear a device and follow a dot with your eyes, then move your eyes with your vision blocked |
| Blood glucose test | First blood draw → eat two slices of bread with strawberry jam plus apple juice within ten minutes → second draw two hours later. Other tests are done while you wait |
| Lung capacity | Three measurements. Blow into the tube as hard as you can for about six seconds |
| EEG | Essentially the same as in Japan. Unlike Japan, they wake you if you start to doze off |
| Urine test | The cup has to be at least half full |
| Psychological assessment | Two tests, around 300 questions in total, answered on mark sheets. About an hour. Working through the questions with Google's camera translation is an effective approach |
The medical standards applied are those of the Taiwan Civil Aeronautics Administration, not STARLUX's own (if the medical certificate is issued, you are fine). Two days are scheduled, but if the center is quiet you may get everything done in one. If there is a seat on the next day's flight, you can email Karen Hsu and negotiate bringing your return home forward by a day.
DAY
5
Medical (day 2)
The remaining tests. If everything was finished on DAY 4, the day is yours.
DAY
6
Return home
Hotel check-out is by 11:00. Head to Taoyuan Airport Terminal 1 and fly home. The Japanese arrival card can also be registered online in advance.
Travel costs during the selection event (indicative)
| Leg | Uber taxi (return, approx.) |
| Hotel ↔ Starlux Operations Center | approx. NTD 500 |
| Hotel ↔ Civil Aviation Medical Center (medical) | approx. NTD 2,000–2,500 |
If you use the public bus: an EasyCard, bought at a 7-Eleven, at the Taoyuan Airport bus stop or at an MRT station, makes life easier. Routes can be searched on Google Maps. The app "iBus公路客運" (Chinese only) shows nearby stops, real-time bus positions and estimated arrival times.
When you hear the result: the medical results take about ten working days. The final decision then follows the Chairman's approval — usually around 20 working days in total, though it can come through in about ten.
From Pass to Offer
From the pass notification to the Offer Letter
1
Pass notification — proposed start date and fleet
You receive your medical certificate result together with the decision email. If you have passed, it includes a proposed start date and fleet. If either differs from what you want, negotiate before you accept. Nothing can be changed afterwards. If you are going to decline, this is your last chance.
2
Pre-hire notice — start date and fleet confirmed
Reply that you intend to join and a "Pre-hire notice" follows immediately, fixing your start date and fleet (an informal offer at this stage). Sign and return the notice and you move to the next step.
3
Work Permit application
STARLUX, as your employer, applies to the Taiwanese government. Issue takes about a month. Do not hand in your resignation until the work permit has been granted.
4
Offer Letter — the job is confirmed
Once the Labor Permit is issued the "Offer Letter" arrives and you are asked to confirm your intention to join for the last time. After you accept, "On-board Notices" are attached setting out the documents and formalities still to come. Some of them take a long time to obtain, so start early.
Documents to Submit Before You Join
Email these about a month before your start date
These are the documents due by the deadlines set out in the On-board Notices.
-
◉
Personal data and intellectual property consent (web form)
Completed online via the link in the On-board Notices. It includes a field for a nickname, which becomes the name part of your company email address (e.g. "[email protected]"). Internally, everyone goes by their nickname.
-
◉
iPad serial number
The iPad you use on the line is your own — the company does not issue one. iPad, iPad Air and iPad Pro all qualify (iPad mini does not). No requirement on storage size or Wi-Fi+Cellular. It must support the specified iOS version. You will install a lot of apps after joining, so reasonable storage is recommended. Send the serial number by email.
-
◉
Copy of your passport
With at least ten months of validity remaining. If you hold a US C1/D visa, submit a copy of that as well.
-
◉
Copy of your ATPL
Simply resend what you submitted with your application. Ratings and limitations are not required.
-
◉
Latest PC record
If you have had a recurrent check since submitting your application, send a copy of the latest record. The same format as at application stage is fine.
-
◉
Criminal record certificate (Non criminal record)
This becomes obtainable once you have an offer. It takes over a month, so start the application early. The certificate is issued sealed and marked "invalid if opened", but you open it to scan or photograph it. Bring the original with you on your first day (no apostille or consular legalisation required). The application procedure is covered in detail in the next section.
-
◉
Relationship certificate (Japanese family register + English translation)
Proof of first-degree relatives, needed to establish EF (Employee Flight) eligibility. Obtain your family register (koseki tohon) and attach your own English translation (no certification required). After joining you upload it to the company intranet, so keep a copy in the cloud.
-
◉
Passport-size photographs (4.5×3.5cm)
Used for the residence permit (ARC card) and health insurance card applications. They must meet the specification, including a white background (the same specification applies to the resident visa application).
Obtaining the Criminal Record Certificate
Applying via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
When the certificate is destined for Taiwan and the purpose is an employment permit, prefectural police headquarters will not accept a direct application. You must go through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From your first email to the certificate in hand takes one to one and a half months.
1
Email the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
To:
[email protected]
Subject: 警察証明特別発給 (send this subject line in Japanese — "Police Certificate, special issuance")
To whom it may concern,
Name: [Full name]
Mobile number: [Mobile number]
Country of submission: Taiwan
Purpose of submission: Employment permit
Thank you for your assistance.
2
Next working day: instructions and the "police certificate referral request form" (Word) arrive
Follow the instructions to prepare documents ①, ② and ③ and reply to the Ministry.
3
Reply to the Ministry with three attachments
① Police certificate referral request form
Requesting country: Taiwan / Requesting authority: Civil Aviation Administration / Reason for request: employment permit / Governing document: Regulations on Safeguarding Civil Aviation against acts of unlawful interference, Article 9 (also enter your name, nationality, address, passport number and phone number)
② The "non criminal request letter" that came from STARLUX with your Offer Letter
③ A copy of the Taiwan Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) regulation with Article 9 highlighted
Download the Word/PDF from the CAA website (03-23A Regulations on Safeguarding Civil Aviation Against Acts of Unlawful Interference), highlight the relevant part of Article 9 and save it.
4
About a week later: an email confirming your documents have been passed to the National Police Agency
5
One to two weeks later: the National Police Agency calls your mobile → fingerprinting and the formal application at the police headquarters for your area
What to bring:
- • Your original passport
- • Proof of name and address (driving license, My Number card or certificate of residence)
- • The criminal record certificate application form (completed at the counter everywhere except Tokyo and Kanagawa)
| Prefecture | Where to go | Opening hours |
| Tokyo | Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department HQ | Mon–Fri 8:30-11:30 / 13:00-16:30 |
| Kanagawa | Kanagawa Prefectural Police HQ | Mon–Fri 9:00-11:30 / 13:00-16:00 |

6
About two weeks later: collect the criminal record certificate, bringing your passport
Resident Visa Application
How to apply for the Taiwan resident visa
You obtain the resident visa by submitting documents to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Japan (TECO). Which office you use depends on where you live.
Kanto residents (Tokyo, Chiba, Saitama, etc.)
Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (Tokyo)
Fridays only, by appointment
Kanagawa residents
Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office, Yokohama Branch
Appointment required on essentially all days
Opening hours (both offices)
Weekdays (Mon–Fri) 9:00–11:30 / 13:00–16:00
Documents required
◉
Visa application form (completed online; valid for about a month from creation)
◉
Two passport-size photographs (one glued to the form, one carried loose — white background required)
◉
Original passport with at least six months' validity, plus a copy
◉
Copy of your Work Permit
◉
Original certificate of residence issued within the last three months, or a copy of both sides of your driving license
◉
Fee of ¥10,100
A note on photographs: Japanese passport photos accept any background color, but photographs for the resident visa and residence permit must have a white background. Even if yours is rejected at the counter, there is a photo booth that produces white-background shots inside or near the building, so you can retake it on the spot.
Worked example: filling in the online visa form

Print the form, glue on one photograph and sign it exactly as in your passport. The resident visa is valid for three months from issue, so apply no earlier than three months before your planned arrival in Taiwan. The visa is issued about a week after application. Your passport stays with them while it is processed, which matters if you are still flying international routes. Once you enter Taiwan on the resident visa, you then convert it to a residence permit (ARC card).
Documents to Hand Over on Day One
Bring these with you on your first day
◉
Resignation Certificate / Demission Certificate (hard copy) — have your company sign or seal it before your last day
◉
Flight Hours Certificate (hard copy) — have your company sign or seal it before your last day
◉
Non-incident / accident Record (hard copy) — have your company sign or seal it before your last day
◉
Flight Hours Summary Before Starlux (printed) — enter your flight time by type. The PIC column takes PIC time; the FO column takes the total of FO, SIC, DUAL and everything else. PIC + FO for each type must add up to the Grand Total, and that total must match the total on your Flight Hours Certificate
◉
Criminal record certificate (original) — bring it even if it is not on the day-one packing list

You do not need to bring your Japanese license or logbook to Taiwan, but after joining you will be asked for your cross-country PIC and FO times as at your last flight — so photograph the final page of your logbook before you go. STARLUX does not use personal logbooks; all flight time is held in the company's data systems.
Administrative Tasks in Japan
What to sort out before you leave
What you need to do depends on your family situation, whether you are moving alone or with your family, where you currently live and so on. Talk to your local municipal office in advance.
Overseas relocation notification (can be filed from 14 days before departure)
| What it affects | Details |
| Residence tax | No liability from the following year (you still owe the balance for the year in which you move out) |
| Pension | You may switch voluntarily to the National Pension (mandatory if you want to keep contributing to iDeCo) |
| Health insurance | Coverage ends. Medical costs in Japan during home visits are entirely out of pocket (private insurance is available) |
| My Number card | Can be kept if you optionally complete the overseas continued-use procedure |
Other formalities, depending on your circumstances
Health insurance (if family stay behind)
If your spouse works for a company, they move onto that employer's health insurance. If they work part-time or are a homemaker, they switch to National Health Insurance or continue your current cover voluntarily (up to two years).
Defined contribution pension (DC)
If you are enrolled through your employer and want to continue, join the National Pension first, then switch to individual iDeCo (within six months of leaving your job).
Children (if you move alone)
Change the named applicant to your spouse for the child medical certificate, child allowance and (in Tokyo) the 018 Support payment.
Property tax, vehicle tax and the like
You may need to register a tax agent to handle payments on assets you leave behind in Japan.
✈
That is everything you need before leaving for Taiwan
Once you arrive, there is a separate round of formalities: signing a lease, setting up a mobile phone contract, registering for e-Gate and so on.
