Stability × Salary Matrix
See at a glance which careers deliver high pay and stability at the same time.
Careers protected by licenses and qualifications, with high barriers to entry. Once you are established, high pay is sustained reliably.
Pay is performance-based with no ceiling, but there is a real risk of being laid off in your 40s or taking a deep cut when business turns down.
Little risk of losing the job, but the salary ceiling is low and a big step up in your 30s or 40s is hard to expect.
Pay and stability are low in the short term, but build enough skill and there is a path through to the winners' zone.
Three reasons the pilot career is unbeatable for stable high pay
Safer than global finance, better paid than the public sector. Why does the profession work out this way?
Very little spread between individuals
Even a First Officer earns 1,200万円 or more, and Captains ¥2,400–3,000万円. There is almost none of the low-earning tail you see among lawyers or in global finance. The licensing system and union pay scales guarantee the floor.
Generous retirement payout and pension
Retirement payouts at the major airlines run from several tens of millions of yen to more than 1億円, with a defined-benefit pension on top. There is none of the redundancy risk of global finance, and the reassurance of employment continuing to the retirement age of 60.
Your skills travel worldwide
A move to a Middle Eastern, European or North American carrier can realistically mean ¥4,500–9,000万円 a year, tax-free. No other high-income career offers this many ways to earn abroad — arguably it is the only one with no Japanese-language constraint.
