1. The pilot salary landscape
Flying is one of the highest-paying professions in Japan. Pay varies widely by airline, rank, aircraft type and years of experience, but as of 2026 the benchmarks look like this.
| Region | First Officer annual salary | Captain annual salary | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🇯🇵 Japan (majors) | 1,200–1,500万円 | 1,800–2,800万円 | ANA, JAL |
| 🇯🇵 Japan (LCCs) | 600–900万円 | 1,000–1,500万円 | Peach, Jetstar and others |
| 🇺🇸 US majors | 1,500–2,500万円 | 4,000–8,400万円 | Delta, United, American |
| 🇪🇺 Europe | 1,000–1,600万円 | 2,000–3,500万円 | Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France |
What stands out is the gap between overseas and domestic pay. Senior Captains at the US majors can clear $465,000 (about 7,000万円) a year, up to two or three times what an ANA or JAL Captain earns. Middle Eastern carriers (Emirates, Qatar Airways) pay tax-free salaries, so the advantage is even larger on a take-home basis.
2. Pilot pay at Japanese airlines
ANA (All Nippon Airways) pilot salary
ANA pilot pay is among the very best of Japan's full-service carriers. First Officers earn roughly 1,400–1,800万円 and Captains roughly 2,400–3,000万円 (average 2,700万円). Captains flying widebodies such as the 787 and 777 tend to sit higher still.
- First Officer (3–5 years with the company): approx. 1,200–1,400万円
- First Officer (senior): approx. 1,500–1,700万円
- Captain (narrowbody): approx. 1,900–2,200万円
- Captain (widebody): approx. 2,500–3,000万円

JAL (Japan Airlines) pilot salary
JAL pilot pay sits at almost the same level as ANA. Expect roughly 1,300–1,600万円 as a First Officer and 2,400–3,000万円 as a Captain (average 2,700万円). The airline rebuilt its pay structure after its 2010 bankruptcy and now offers stable terms.
- First Officer (early career): approx. 1,100–1,300万円
- First Officer (senior): approx. 1,400–1,600万円
- Captain: approx. 1,900–2,300万円

LCC (low-cost carrier) pilot salary
Pay at LCCs such as Peach Aviation, Jetstar and Spring Japan is lower than at the majors: roughly 600–900万円 for a First Officer and 1,000–1,500万円 for a Captain. That said, opportunities to upgrade to Captain come earlier, and a growing number of pilots choose an LCC precisely for that career acceleration.
3. Pilot pay at overseas airlines
Emirates pilot salary
Emirates offers one of the strongest packages in the world. Captain pay is equivalent to 3,500–4,500万円 (paid in USD and tax-free), with a comprehensive benefits package covering housing allowance, medical insurance and school fees for children. Because you are resident in Dubai there is no income tax, so take-home pay can be more than double what you would earn in Japan.

Qatar Airways pilot salary
Qatar Airways pilot pay is equivalent to 3,000–4,000万円 for a Captain. Based in Doha, the airline also pays salaries free of income tax. It has been hiring Japanese pilots actively in recent years and is a popular destination for pilots considering a move.
Singapore Airlines pilot salary
Captain pay at Singapore Airlines is around 2,800–3,500万円. English is an official language in Singapore, and the lifestyle in Asia's financial and cultural hub is a major draw. The airline has a long track record of hiring Japanese pilots.
US majors (Delta, United, American) pilot salary
Senior Captains at the three US majors earn more than $465,000 (about 7,000万円). Contract negotiations in 2023–2024 delivered substantial pay rises, making these the highest-paying pilot jobs in the world. Note, however, that US pilot hiring is restricted for foreign nationals, so it is a difficult route for Japanese pilots.
4. The pay gap between Captain and First Officer
Upgrading from First Officer (F/O) to Captain (PIC) is the single biggest turning point in a pilot's career. The impact on pay varies by airline, but you can generally expect an increase of 500–1,500万円 on upgrade.
| Airline | First Officer (senior) | Captain | Increase on upgrade |
|---|---|---|---|
| ANA | approx. 1,500万円 | approx. 2,500万円 | +1,000万円 |
| JAL | approx. 1,400万円 | approx. 2,100万円 | +700万円 |
| Emirates | approx. 2,000万円 | approx. 4,000万円 | +2,000万円 |
| Qatar Airways | approx. 1,800万円 | approx. 3,500万円 | +1,700万円 |
At ANA and JAL it typically takes 10–15 years as a First Officer to reach command, whereas at overseas carriers such as Emirates and Qatar Airways upgrade can come in as little as 5–8 years. Reaching the left seat while you are still young is one of the biggest attractions of moving abroad.
5. Pilot career moves and career paths
Company-sponsored cadet (airline-funded training)
The company-sponsored cadet selection run each year by ANA, JAL, Peach and others is a program in which the airline covers the full cost of training (2,000–3,000万円) once you are hired. Applications are open to arts and science graduates alike, provided you hold a university degree and meet the vision and medical standards. Competition can exceed 100 applicants per place, so it is a narrow gate — but it is the lowest-risk route there is.
Route via the Civil Aviation College
This route takes you through the national Civil Aviation College (Miyazaki and Obihiro) and on to an airline. Tuition is far lower than at a self-funded school, and the college has a strong record of placing graduates with Japanese airlines. Competition is stiff, but the intake is wider than for company-sponsored cadet programs.
Route via self-funded training (flight school)
Here you pay for your own training at a flight school overseas (the US, the Philippines, Australia and so on), obtain your licenses and then start job hunting. The cost runs to roughly 2,000–3,500万円, but once you hold the licenses your choice of airline widens considerably. It is the strongest route if you are aiming specifically at a job abroad.
Experienced-hire recruitment (from another airline or the JSDF)
If you already hold a pilot license and have logged flight hours, you can move to another airline through experienced-hire recruitment. Moves from the Japan Self-Defense Forces and the Ministry of Defense are common, and military flying experience is highly regarded in the civil sector. Requirements are often 1,500–5,000 flight hours or more.
6. How to move to an overseas airline
Moving abroad as a pilot brings major benefits in both pay and experience. Airlines in the Middle East (UAE, Qatar) and Asia (Singapore, Hong Kong) in particular are actively hiring Japanese pilots.
Licenses and requirements
- ATPL (Airline Transport Pilot License): mandatory for any overseas full-service carrier
- Flight hours: 1,500–3,000 hours or more for First Officer positions, 5,000–8,000 hours or more for Captain positions
- English proficiency: ICAO Language Proficiency Level 4 or above (most airlines favor Level 5–6)
- Type ratings on the B737, A320, B777, B787 and similar: a clear advantage in recruitment
Airlines hiring actively (as of 2026)
- Emirates: B777 and A380. Captain pay from 4,000万円
- Qatar Airways: B787 and A350. Captain pay from 3,500万円
- Singapore Airlines: B787 and A350. Captain pay from 3,000万円
- Cathay Pacific: B777 and A350. Captain pay from 2,800万円

7. Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Which airline ranks first for pilot pay?
On raw salary, senior Captains at the US majors (Delta, United, American Airlines) top the list at over $465,000 (about 7,000万円). Hiring there is restricted for foreign nationals, however. Among airlines open to foreign pilots, Emirates leads the field with Captain pay of 4,000–4,500万円, tax-free.
How many years does it take to upgrade from First Officer to Captain?
At ANA and JAL in Japan it normally takes 10–15 years, with 5,000–8,000 flight hours or more required. Overseas carriers such as Emirates and Qatar Airways are expanding their route networks, so upgrade opportunities can arrive in 5–8 years. If early command is your goal, moving abroad is a serious option.
Will pilot pay keep rising?
The global pilot shortage is deepening and pay is on an upward trend. Boeing and Airbus forecast a need for more than 600,000 pilots worldwide by 2040. Competition for crews is especially fierce in the growth markets of the Middle East and Asia, where terms continue to improve. In Japan, ANA and JAL both implemented pay rises between 2023 and 2025.
How much does it cost to become a pilot?
For company-sponsored cadets, the airline covers the entire cost once you are hired (2,000–3,000万円). The Civil Aviation College is state-run and relatively affordable (tuition of 200–400万円). Self-funded training at an overseas flight school requires roughly 2,000–3,500万円. The cadet route carries by far the lowest financial risk, but competition for places is intense.
